SUPPORT A MIGHTY WORKSHOP!
Since 2009, Mighty Writers has been offering free writing workshops to Philly kids ages seven to 17. Taught by MW staffers and volunteer writing professionals, the workshops are designed around topics that will turn kids on to writing.
Help us keep our workshops free to students. Your donation of $125 will allow a Mighty student to attend one of MW's most popular workshops free of charge.
Our Fan-Favorite Mighty Workshops
Our time is now and we're shouting it loud and proud. Through the readings of young, older, and diverse women writers, as well as team-building exercises and straight talk about boundaries and cultural messaging, our MW girls will find and develop their compassionate, proud and empowered voices.
For kids in our Mighty immigrant community, this self-esteem building workshop counteracts the increasingly prevalent tendency to view immigration as something to hide and be embarrassed about. As they write their own family stories, kids from our El Futuro site come to learn about the hard work and bravery that has characterized so many ethnic communities through the generations.
Plugging in devices, driving cars and cooling homes all rely on natural gas, oil and coal. These energy sources release carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. When CO2 and other greenhouse gases trap heat that would otherwise escape earth’s atmosphere, the planet’s temperature rises. That’s called global warming, and that causes climate change. Now what are we going to do about it?
Spotting Fake News
Students learn the difference between thoroughly reported news, advertising, editorials, satire and other kinds of media. They learn the value of fact checking and how to navigate what they read on the internet, including what to look for on websites so that the news they are receiving is based in truth.
Comic Book Madness!
Students who love comics, anime and cartooning create their own superheroes and characters through illustrated stories. Once they've created the art, we work with the kids to develop storylines. Comic book writing is the perfect gateway to narrative writing for stubborn young writers.
