Man, Do We Go through the Books!

December 14, 2015

Dear Mighty Friends & Family,

I’m Khalia Robinson, the Program Director at Mighty Writers West, 3861 Lancaster Avenue. If you see the light on, stop in!

The best part of my job is when a parent walks in and says, “Thank you so much for all you guys are doing. My son hates when he can’t come to Mighty Writers.” There’s no greater joy than seeing a parent’s pride when you tell them how amazing their child is doing!

At Mighty Writers West, there’s always room for more volunteers. We’re all about the fresh, new and now, and ways to build our culture. Come share your love of writing and expertise with our students. Follow the navigation to the left to sign up as a volunteer.

At all MW sites, we give away books. At MW West, they’re flying off the shelves. If you have any old books around the house or office, our community would love to recycle-read them! Contact me to schedule a drop-off time.

I’d love to see West Philadelphia and Mighty Writers become synonymous. With the public schools suffering, supplemental education is the wave of the future.

Stop in, look us up, ask about us–just don’t keep riding by the sign thinking, “What is Mighty Writers?” Whether it be for a season or a lifetime, as long as there is a need to write, there will be a need for Mighty Writers. See you soon.

Stay Mighty!

Letter from Shamira O’Neal, Program Director, MW North

December 3, 2015

Dear parents, volunteers, kids, teens & Mighty Writers of every age,

My name is Shamira O’Neal and I’m the Program Director here. Mighty Writers North is located at The Advocate Center, 1801 Diamond St. in Philadelphia.

During the fall of 2015 in our Mighty Writers Academy, we discussed our struggles and how we overcame them. We wrote persuasive essays and talked about the idea of the American Dream.

Between the World & Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates was the roadmap for our first semester of Teen Scholars. Coates’ ideals and stream of consciousness writing led to deep conversation and set the foundation for our writing.

Shamira and Rashee

Our most popular evening workshop was “Who Runs The World? Girls.” This group has supported Michelle Obama’s “Let Girls Learn” campaign and investigated what confidence looks, sounds and feels like. After two months of conversation and writing, we’re all experts in #blackgirlmagic. Stay tuned for more Monday night workshops with girl power themes!

Other popular workshops this fall included “Cursive Writing Through the Ages,” “…deep like the rivers,” and “Oh, The Places We’ll Go!” You can find links to all of our current programs here.

I’m generally in the office Monday to Thursday 12-8pm and Friday 2-6pm. Stop by and introduce yourself!

I look forward to meeting you.
