ATLANTIC CITY - Mighty Writers, an educational nonprofit with multiple locations in Greater Philadelphia, Camden and Newark, today officially announced the launch of an innovative new operation in Atlantic City, New Jersey, aimed at empowering kids from 7 to 17 to develop their own voices and to think and write with clarity.
The new Mighty Writers location, at 15 N. California Ave., will offer free after-school programs, summer camps, workshops and family activities, all designed to build community, childhood self-esteem, and a passion for words and learning.
"There's always talk about plans and new initiatives to energize Atlantic City," says Tim Whitaker, executive director of Mighty Writers. "Our goal is to create a community of clear thinkers. Kids who can express their hopes and needs with clarity are destined to have a promising future."
Mighty Writers has been operating in Atlantic City for two years, teaching kids everything from surfing to graffiti art. In addition, MW has offered weekly essential-needs giveaways in Atlantic City's 3rd Ward, providing free food, diapers and books. Now, with a permanent home in the old Our Lady Star of the Sea convent in Ducktown, MW will be able to expand its offerings.
"We've met so many people who grew up in the city, moved away for a bit, and came back," says Leila Crawford, Mighty Writers' director of New Jersey operations. "We want to energize that same AC pride in the kids we teach."
Tom Sykes, Mighty Writers AC's program director, is one of those people who came home to Atlantic City. A screenwriting graduate from NYU's Tisch School of Arts, Sykes lived in L.A. and wrote for film and TV before returning to his beloved hometown.
"We're all about reading, writing and bettering our kids, but our program is not school - it's so much more," Sykes says of Mighty Writers AC. "It's about culture. It's about community. It's about Atlantic City."
